  Hype anew: What’s in IT for you?

  Whilst Cognitive-ET is a work in progress, today’s IT is fostering business with flamboyant new methods!
  Get ready for a new surge in business, benefiting every actors in the economy.
  BPM-IT alignment adoption for the past 4 years, at least as a discipline, has laid the foundation for a fruitful creation of new and tailored services to the clientèle. The result:
  A decade advent of heightening customer satisfaction, hyping up businesses worldwide. The economy as a whole will profit ))
  The framework as the best specialized analyst predicted has unleashed creativity in all layers of the enterprise (see the cubic generic model of EA below).

  Be it Management, Monitoring, or “Mutatis mutandis”, Modelling correctly is quite a Milestone to achieve successful implementation of complex systems …

  Taking all the buzz apart, BPM systems truly can enable business agility while empowering business & IT collaboration.. The decisive challenge is:

  Acquiring the correct methodological approach :)

  And indeed,  a BPM suite (BPMS)  enables business stakeholders with a powerful software to describe, execute, monitor, and change when required business processes under their scope of responsability..

  While BPMS enables IT stakeholders to capture well the explicit desire of business stakeholders for Business Applications ^^

  However, this new discipline for concerted Business Modelling and flexible IT implementation is quite a novelty for mainstream enterprise projects today.

  Hence, effective BPMS integration for agility requires the mastering of a new methodological approach to modelling and implementation of executable business processes.

  The good news is:

  1. Such exist,

  2. Has proved to be successful,

  3. Facilitates Business and IT lifes

  4. And is an iterative process.. Enabling focused Continuous Process Improvement (CPI ;-)

  When a ruling king (“Roi” in french ;-) died, the people of France used to instantely cheer the new king by saying:

  “Le ROI est mort… Vive le ROI!”…

  And indeed, the Return On Investment (ROI) as we knew it has ceased to rule… And a new forthcoming era of ROI is making grandiose debuts in governance ;-)

  This ROI is also a triptych of benefits for the Enterprise Technology, and corresponds to the triptych of excellence in Business Execution, enabled with BPMS: Agility, Efficiency, and Compliance…

  Its dimensions are:

  1. Return On Innovation –> Leveraging Agility :)

  2. Return On Investment –> Leveraging Efficiency :)

  3. Return On Information –> Leveraging Compliance and more… :-)

  Let’s see:

  First and foremost, Return On Innovation is achieved by BPMS because innovative projects are easily implemented and strictly monitored, within the global value chain of the business execution.

  Indeed, previously detailed is BPMS enabling smooth, rapid, and cost-effective implementation.

  And important to assess is the value of innovation, with such being achieved with BPMS Business Intelligence…

  Business Execution Performance metrics being made available with the Business Activity Monitoring (BAM) module of BPMS.

  Well then, the BAM enables Business Managers with effective feedback from the Key Performance Indicators (KPI) of the innovative projects…

  And innovative initiatives can easily be implemented and put to the test…

  Thus BPMS is enabling a Continuous Process Improvement (CPI) loop for innovation :)

  Second, while Return On Investment is following the well known curve of leveraging efficient technologies within the Enterprise business model, Return On Information happens with BPMS on numerous occasions…

  Mainly, I’ll say that BPMS brings to the management an all new world of Business Intelligence covering Business Execution :-)

  So, we can now actually make a legitimate assumption on the compounded benefits of implementing BPMS technology Enterprise-wide:

  Successful BPMS adoption supports business innovation :-)

  And business innovation is the golden key of corporate success for numerous reasons:

  Mainly (being innovative ;-) …

  - Innovation helps diferentiating the Business Model,

  - Innovation enables First Mover’s Advantage,

  - Innovation gets people excited… With clients discovering new products and services, while employees are getting motivated by new business stimulation…

  And such stimulation can benefit numerous stakeholders across the Enterprise Value Chain (EVC), with innovation being Humane focused, benefiting and harvesting from Creative Capitalism and Sustainable Development initiatives :-)

  While innovative projects are often thought about by talented and creative stakeholders in enterprises today, most projects fail before they even get started or even discussed about… Why?

  Well… mostly because the business execution impact and foreseeable business intelligence of the innovative project is not clear for decision :(

  Successfully implementing BPMS will change the game :-)

  And I don’t know many Executives not in for that one!

  Ok then… What’s the BPMS bottom line?

  Clean and simple?

  Well… It’s delivering Business Applications faster and more efficiently :) Enabling better control on Business Execution ;-)
  

  Whichever the implemented ITS technology, BPMS will help organizations create flexible systems supporting and monitoring their business execution, while enabling fast adaptability of the systems.

  Mainly, such is possible because BPMS seats on top of Information Systems whichever their structure, look & feel… Thus taking advantage of a loosely coupled, inter-dependent, dynamic relationship (concretizing SOA ;-)… In which Business Explicit Services (BES) consume IT services developed according to the business need:

  Such Architecture is agile, business oriented, flexible, and very adaptable to new business requirements :)

  While everybody familiar with Web Services technology would tell you how flexible and adaptable the technology is… Without a clear business direction and explicit Business requirement, Web Services (WS) and SOA (discipline of Enterprise Architecture mainly used with Web Services) are just not practical and are difficult to manage, Enterprise-wide.

  Thus, BPMS concretizes and delivers on the promises of SOA and Web Services, the 2 grandiose IT technologies enabling flexibility and adaptabiliy within any Information System :-)

  BPMS, SOA, Web services… A triptych of technologies furthermore taking Business Applications towards Business Agility… Wichever the underlying implemented ITS technology (thanks to SOA and web services ;-)

  Hum… “Whichever the underlying implemented technology”: Now that’s important as it means that your previous and current technological and IT Service Management (ITSM) solutions and investments are still valid, and not becoming obsolete… At all!

  Well then, I hope to have given above clear arguments on the business case for BPMS ;-)

  However, such arguments focus only on the main advantage of BPMS: Better Business Applications

  Thus there are 2 other principal advantages of BPMS I’d like to present for this entry’s purpose:

  1. Smooth integration within your Enterprise
  

  –> Focus on 1 process!

  Grasp the benefits:

  Learn the proven methodologies, Capture the natural ROI

  Then, Diffuse the technology where and as needed :-)

  2. A cost-effective and performing open solution for Governance and Compliance

  Simply stated, Governance and Compliance is mainly about Business Process Efficiency, which BPMS masters effectively, being flexible, adaptable, open-standard oriented (BPMN, BPEL, XML, WSDL… :) and cost-effective ( Natural ROI; And also acknowledging that open-source BPMS Intalio is within Gartner’s magic quadrant and should remain :-)

  For all 3 main advantages, your foremost valuable investment will come from the proven and practical methodologies you will learn and integrate in your Business Model… For BPM, SOA, and ITSM are foremostly disciplines created to attain excellence in supporting your Business Model :-)

  Don’t you like the following maxim? … I know I do: “Asking the good question demands as much talent as to answer it” Robert Half

  Well, isn’t it about talent, synchronicity, Human communication… ?

  And isn’t communication the grandiose mean mankind developed to create ever richer, safer, and humane societies?

  Well then… Dialogue synchronizes talents… And talents within the enterprise is plenty, both within your business and IT communities.

  However, there is a communication gap that is simply wasting the talent synergy!

  Dialogue has to be brought back :-)

  And BPM and BPMS technologies have also been created for that purpose:

  Enabling Business and IT synergy to develop better, richer, humane, performing and innovative [...] Applications supporting better environments, organizations, communities, societies…

  The key concept: Explicit models leveraging a unified ontology
  

  With BPM, Business managers clearly understand the design and management of their business process.

  With BPMS, IT has a clear understanding of explicit business services to be supported by ITS services.

  The gap no longer exists because:

  - BPM models are explicit (well can and should be  ;-)

  - BPMS provides for the tools and engine to implement, execute, control, manage and update these models

  - BPM and BPMS address the Business Architecture layer of Enterprise Technology in which no agile and industrialized solution existed before

  - BPMS synchronizes with a serving ;-) SOA, the patterns of the Service model of Business and IT being developed similarly and concertedly, thus elevating Business and IT synchronicity

  The bonus: Less maintenance cost in software intensive development, which represents on average 80% of the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of IT Applications, widely because of miscommunication :(

  –> A natural Return On Investment (ROI) over time

  Simply stated (for the thechies ;-) :BPM brings to SOA what UML brings to OO

  –> Methodologies and patterns for relevant, consistent and efficient design

  Simply stated otherwise:

  BPMS is the fabric for clear Business-IT – Communication – Synergy – Alignment – Synchronicity

  –> On which mutually understandable and manageable Business Services Requirements are developed, implemented, and consumed.

  However, creating that fabric is not an easy task…

  It requires:

  - Practical and proven methodologies

  - A comprehensive and Human-centric framework for Enterprise Technology

  - BPM leadership wihin the Enterprise

  - Thriving for a better Human condition

  Such is the framework we endeavor to clarify on Cognitive-ET ;-)

  Well… Stakeholders familiar with The Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF) will recognize its concepts in the following generic model of Enterprise Architecture (EA)… Others will appreciate its simplicity and completeness :-)

  

  With regards to BPMS benefits for EA, we like to call it the “diamond in the ruff” of EA as it brings Flexibility and Adaptability to the generic model laid before, from a top-down approach, Business being the driver of all Enterprise Technology.

  Thus, the following view of the framework brings in an interesting view on how Enterprise Technology can achieve Agilty in adapting to changing business needs:

  

  BPMS can deliver on its promises when architected for Business Agility.

  SOA comes in the picture as the providing backbone of IT services to be consumed by the Business Services, defined within the Business Architecture, implemented and managed by the BPMS…

  The implementation of the IT services being performed at the Technology Architecture level, whichever the technology.

  Thus, the later view of the model represents an actionable EA framework for effectively managing change and complexity facing enterprises today, at both business and IT level.

  Wherein Business and IT governance decides on the Business Rules to be implemented within the BPMS Architecture.

  The vision; An agile, efficient & adaptable BPM architecture.

  My contribution draws from studying science of the Human mind (i.e. Psychology and Neuroscience :) and being a Business Developer in engineering (specifically in BPMS architecture). Activities and experience that enable two complementary viewpoints on Enterprise Technology, with a Human-centric perspective: It helps bridging best of breed concepts from these 2 worlds of Information management.

  Well indeed, the Human mind is managing information for the Human being towards Human objectives, while orchestrating biologically inter-dependent and loosely coupled services from the Human body… And environment: It is quite an enterprise ;-)

  Well, built in the Human Enterprise Architecture is the triptych of excellence in execution: Agility, Efficiency, and Compliance that we talked about in the big picture.

  The conceptual Architectural framework on which it elaborates can be understood as a flexible Enterprise Architecture driven by an efficient Human Process Management engine, orchestrating mental objectives with organic services delivered by a Human SOA: The analogy is quite stunning! And indeed, the Human mind synchronizes the execution of billions of processes and services every seconds of a life time, and moreover through a binary ( active/ passive :) model of information processing… And that’s Enterprise performance ;-)

  Now, such analogy is also relevant to our purpose because Human business and IT governance are involved and regulate process execution. After IT helping conceptualizing models for the Human mind, the Human mind models can now contribute in inspiring IT towards higher levels of efficiency :-)

  While science of Psychology is a broad domain, concepts of Social Psychology, Creative Capitalism and Sustainable Development will also contribute in developing Enterprise Technology in a humane perspective. BPM and BPMS being the fabric of this natural evolution, mainly because they enable socially beneficial processes and business rules to be easily integrated into the commercial ones :-)

  Furthermore fostering Enterprise Innovation and Leadership ;-)

  While ‘About Cognitive-ET’ – the page – is explicit in detailing its objective (hopefully), mastering to grasp in short what BPM and BPMS practically mean is a daunting task… Thus, we might as well just try and go for it:

  To me, Business Process Management (BPM) is about understanding and mastering business execution explicitly. While BPM is a management discipline, I consider it to be efficient as long as it is used with a human-centric approach.

  While BPM by definition looks at processes in business, it’s clear to me that a long-run, end-to-end view of the processes is essential, within the scope of responsibilities. Mostly because processes are building blocks of other bigger processes interacting with each other, thus affecting the global value chain of a business. The goal being to better understand and organize business execution, these interactions are to be made explicit and understood.

  While BPM is the discipline, BPMS is the tool to dynamically master business execution, as it allows people and systems to deliver on their services when required in the process.
  

  Now, since BPM is the conduit for process improvement, and BPMS the conduit for it’s processing, wouldn’t top level patrons of BPM and BPMS analysis, design and implementation be paramount to effectively create the triptych of excellence in Business Execution: Agility, Efficiency, and Compliance?

  Well then, our proposed discussion will thus try to elaborate on a compounded framework for BPMS: A human-centric approach for enterprise processes improvement, which considers and builds from best practices in BPM, SOA, Enterprise Content Management (ECM), Business and IT governance.
